Please download the Oak311 app as it is quite useful to submit issues to different City departments, i.e., potholes, non-functioning street lights, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, etc.

This group of Beat 22Y neighbors works closely with City of Oakland and Oakland Police/Fire Department staff to promote public safety, awareness, inclusion and overall well-being in our community, through collaborative partnerships between residents, city staff and local law enforcement.

The Oakland Fire Dept/Vegetation Management Unit’s annual vegetation inspections occur every year. Adam Ball, Fire Inspector Supervisor (VMU), recorded a "Town Hall" video in 2023 and should be reviewed each year.

Please review wildfire safety programs including Firewise USA, Firescaping (landscaping for fire safety), Red Flag Warnings, ember safety, wildfire monitoring and reporting, safe street parking, Adopt-a-Hydrant, and the GENOAK 2-way emergency radio network.

SEASONAL PREPAREDNESS CHECKLISTS

SPRING / SUMMER + FALL / WINTER

  • Clear and remove debris the community channel drain that runs along your property (where applicable)

  • Clear gutters and downspouts; ensure downspouts are working and pointing away from house

  • Inspect areas around your home to remove any plants, soil or debris that may be impacting your property line and inspect for pets

  • Pressure wash sidewalks and areas that have gathered moss and become slippery

  • Inspect doors, windows, vents, and roof

  • Keep curbs and sidewalk gutters clear of leaves and debris (dispose of in green bins – do not sweep them into the gutter)

  • Inspect water sprinklers and water supplies for leaks and paper operations

  • Check the storm drain near your house and use a rake to keep it clear of debris (see the City of Oakland’s Adopt-a-Drain program.)

  • Inspect Air Conditioner

  • Check that backflow prevention devices on sewer laterals/cleanouts are functioning properly – or consult a plumber to have one installed.

  • Trim trees on your property to help them handle wind and rain; call a certified arborist to inspect your trees if you observe unusual leaning or dead branches

  • Check out your local hardware store for flood prevention tools and techniques such as using sandbags to divert water away from your property or prevent it from coming in through doors and basement windows

  • Inspect fire chimneys for annual cleaning

  • Check in with friends, family and neighbors who may need assistance during extreme weather

  • Pack a “go bag” to evacuate quickly in the event of a urgent weather related event

  • Have insurance policies handy (tip: take photos of each room in your home beforehand)

  • Review emergency procedures and evacuation plans at your children’s schools, your work, and your home

  • Make sure you have emergency supplies to last for at least three days, including enough water, food, medicine and other supplies for family members and pets
